What is a RUBE GOLDBERG Machine?

  • Rube Goldberg machine consists of several components created to perform a series of simple tasks in a chain reaction with at least five steps and popping of a balloon at the end.

  • Rube Goldberg machine teaches students about physics, mathematics, mechanics and technology.

  • Rube Goldberg machine helps students develop patience and perseverance as it requires a lot of testing and fine tuning to make it work correctly.

*** STEPS

  1. I start at the beginning holding a tennis ball that I drop down a ramp

  2. Tennis ball gets sent under a little lever

  3. The lever is holding up a large arm.

  4. The arm swings down to knock over a cup that has water in it.

  5. The water from this cup flows down a half pipe that leads to a paper towel

  6. The paper towel is taped on to a rod that is placed under a roll of tape.

  7. The paper towel weight gets increased as it absorbs the water causing the wand to go up

  8. The wand knocks the tape that rolls down a ramp

  9. The ramp leads to a ruler that guides the tape down a ledge

  10. The tape rolls down and hits the switch of a lamp.

  11. The lamp when turned activates a small solar panel

  12. The solar panel takes the light from the lamp and turns on a motor

  13. The motor activates a fan that has a little popsicle stick attached.

  14. The popsicle stick knocks over the dominoes.

  15. The dominoes fall until they get to a ramp

  16. The dominos fall down the ramp attached to stairs and it knocks over more dominoes.

  17. The last dominoes lead to a mini wheelchair that has a magnet on the end.

  18. The wheelchair gets sent down the ramp to another magnet that is on the end of a string of beads.

  19. The string of beads is tangled inside of a red plastic cup.

  20. In the cup there is a popsicle stick ramp.

  21. There is a marble on the ramp and when the beads get pulled by the wheelchair falling they clear the path of the ramp letting the marble fall.

  22. The marble then falls on top of a gate which opens the way for a Hotwheels car.

  23. The car goes down a big track built along the stair case.

  24. The car then jumps from the track and lands on a ladle that is holding a yo-yo.

  25. The yo-yo rolls down another ramp.

  26. Once the car knocks over this ladle the yo-yo that is tied to the trigger of a dart gun falls off the platform

  27. The yo-yo activates and shoots out a dart that has a string attached.

  28. The string has a sharpie tied onto the other end and is set in the middle of a tape roll.

  29. When the dart is shot out it will pull the marker out of the middle of the string letting the tape roll down a ramp.

  30. Once the tape rolls off the end of the ramp it will land on a switch.

  31. The switch is wired to two batteries so once the switch is hit it activates a robot scorpion

  32. The scorpion has needles in its claws, will approach the balloon and pop it successfully.

My Project

Took a long time to complete because I did a total of 64 recorded attempts. Each time I had to reset the whole thing, making small changes and attempting to try again.  Not only that, but there were many other times, for example, when it would go off by accident when something didn't work correctly setting me back a lot. Another reason why it took so long was, there was a time when I got frustruated and had to take a breaj and put the project on hold without taking it down. I finally got it done before the last day of school and I was very happy.
